Abstract This article presents a new type of left‐handed materials composed of two kinds of triangular open‐loop resonators (TOLRs) and wires. Parameter retrieval algorithm, prism simulations, and the transmission experiments all have been carried out to validate the left‐handed characteristic of TOLR‐wire structures. The negative refraction indices obtained by prism simulations are in good agreement with the retrieval results. Besides, the transmission experiments show that each transmission peak does appear in each negative index frequency region, which confirm the left‐handed characteristic of those two kinds of structures. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
