In this article, a compact tunable periodically LC loaded phase shifter using left‐handed transmission line is presented. The unique nature of left‐handed transmission line metamaterials enables reduced size, compared to conventional loaded line phase shifters realized as right‐handed transmission lines. The phase shifter based on four unit cells provides 0°–280° continuous phase shift at 7.2 GHz from 0 to 6 V. Measured figure of merit is 78°/dB using the highest insertion loss. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
