This letter demonstrated a novel strategy to optimize the extinction ratio and the insertion loss of side‐polished fiber‐optical polarizers. The polarizer has a portion of the cladding polished away and replaced with only a single layer of thin aluminium film. Extinction ratios up to over 22.6 dB/cm and the insertion loss down to 1–2 dB/cm have been realized. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
