We have experimentally demonstrated a radio‐over‐fiber system transmitting 2.5 Gbt/s orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals carried by 40 GHz millimetre ‐wave. The 40 GHz optical millimeter wave signals were generated by a directed modulation laser driven by the 2.5 Gb/s electrical OFDM signals carried by 20 GHz RF signals. The power penalty is less than 1 dB power penalty at bit error rate of 10 −5 after transmission over 20 km standard single mode fiber. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
