Antennas used in radar are expected to have high gain and low sidelobe. To achieve this end, this article presents a novel Ku band planar radome made by left‐handed materials, and then placed in front of an Archimedean spiral antenna element. The properties of the LHMs plane radomes are studied firstly, and the frequency band when the indexes of refraction of the LHMs plane radomes are negative is selected. Several LHMs planar radomes are developed. The gain of the antenna is tested on condition of several different parameters, such as the number of LHMs plane radomes, the distance between the antenna and these LHMs plane radomes, and the distance between two neighbor LHMs plane radomes. The beam is focused by the LHMs plane radomes. And comparing with the pattern of the antenna without these radomes, 5 dB more gain can be obtained by using LHMs planes radome. The electric level of the sidelobe is about −13.5 dB. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
