Developing low‐profile monopole antenna with compact size is very challenging in future RF front‐end systems. In this article, by embedding a complementary split loop resonator into a shorted square disc, we developed a square disc‐loaded monopole antenna with compact size. The volume of the proposed antenna is λ0/16×λ0/16×λ0/20, where λ0 is the wavelength in free space. The radiation pattern of the antenna is similar to that of a short monopole. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
