An ultra‐wideband, dielectric‐immersed antenna has been developed for a breast tumor detection system. The antenna is a tapered slotline that operates in a low permittivity dielectric. The sensor is fed by an ultra‐wideband microstrip‐to‐slotline balun. Simulations of the balun and the tapered profile demonstrate that reflection coefficient bandwidth of each structure spans 2–12 GHz. The antenna and balun are implemented with a photolithography process, and good agreement is obtained between simulated and measured results for the entire structure. To evaluate the suitability of the antenna for the intended application, measurements are performed with a variety of objects placed in a homogeneous background. Detection and location of the objects are explored. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 51: 633–638, 2009; Published online in Wiley InterScience (www.interscience.wiley.com).
