A circularly polarized (CP) microstrip antenna with dual‐frequency operation is presented. The proposed antenna has a square radiating patch with four shorting pins, and it is excited by an L‐shaped strip through the coupling of a ring‐slot in the ground plane. Five PIN diodes are attached to the proposed antenna, and the ability to reconfigure the CP performances is achieved by switching these diodes in certain sequences. The measured results demonstrated that the proposed dual‐frequency antenna is able to operate with a small frequency ratio radiating in the same polarization. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
