We have demonstrated an Erbium fiber laser hybridly mode‐locked by a phase modulator in conjunction with intracavity soliton effect producing pulses as short as 396 fs at 10 GHz. The laser repetition rate is variable from 2 to 12 GHz keeping pulses with duration shorter than 500 fs in this range. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
