On the basis of the characteristics of defected ground structures (DGSs), a low‐pass filter (LPF) with a sharp rejection and an ultra‐wide stopband is constructed. The proposed LPF comprises of a dual reverse U‐shaped DGS along with two H‐shaped patterns on the ground plane and a microstrip line on the top layer. The attenuations are 2 and 32.8 dB at 3.7 and 3.85 GHz, respectively. The maximum attenuation rate is 205 dB/GHz. The proposed LPF achieves an ultra‐wide stopband with overall 20 dB attenuation from 3.75 GHz up to 20 GHz. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
