This letter presents a effective equivalent circuit model of circular slotted ground structure (SGS) under a planar microstrip, which can be used as a kind of periodic structure. The circular SGS exhibits an electromagnetic band gap or stop band in frequency responses. The proposed equivalent circuit model consists of lumped elements which can be demonstrated as a transformer to model coupling between the microstrip line and the circular SGS. Excellent agreement with electromagnetic (EM), extracted circuit simulations, and measurements is demonstrated. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
