The Kretschmann‐type surface plasmon resonance (SPR) waveguide sensor is numerically investigated for detecting a change in the imaginary part of the refractive index. SPR responses are found to be quite sensitive to the change, suggesting the possibility of realizing a compact absorption‐based waveguide sensor integrated into optical circuits. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
