This article presents the derivation of simple CAD formula for coupled microstrip line on a grounded substrate of two layers by synthetic asymptote. The formulas are simple, accurate, and give good physical insights to the design properties. By simply introducing an imaginary part in the permittivity of the bottom layer substrate, the formulas in this article can be applied for coupled microstrip line of silicon‐based RFIC. Not only the even and odd mode characteristic impedances, but also the attenuation and propagation constants are compared with numerical results. Good agreements are obtained. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 50: 2500–2504, 2008; Published online in Wiley InterScience (www.interscience.wiley.com).
