This letter presents a broadband rat‐race coupler designed by using right‐handed artificial transmission lines (ATLs) combined with a composite right/left‐handed ATL; in order to limit spurious parasitic effects, by using metal–air–metal capacitor and short circuited stubs, both kinds of ATLs have been designed without lumped elements, leading to a very compact and monolithic device. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
