This article presents a novel broadband E‐shape radiation pattern reconfiguratable microstrip antenna. The MEMS switches are used to turn the two operations, a basis mode E‐shape microstrip antenna and a high‐order mode E‐shape microstrip antenna. It is important to make wide‐beam and high‐gain radiation patterns of microstrip antennas, which can be used in GPS, mobile terminal, or wide‐angle scanning phased array. The proposed reconfigurable structure is independent from the antenna types. Measured results of the proposed antennas are provided. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
