A novel form of star patch antenna for generating multiple radiation patterns, namely, tilted, axial and doughnut is presented and analyzed. These three patterns can be switched to scan all directions in front of the antenna. Each of these patterns can be generated by exciting one of the six feeding points on the antenna. By examining the current distributions corresponding to the radiation patterns of the antenna, qualitative reasoning's for the radiation mechanisms are also presented. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
