An unbalanced composite right/left‐handed transmission line structure is used for the design of a novel dual‐frequency microstrip antenna operating at X band. It is shown that the antenna has a very similar performance in both the operating modes to that of a conventional microstrip patch antenna (MPA) with respect to radiating characteristics. Moreover, the measured −10 dB bandwidth and gain for the proposed antenna are improved. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
