A compact branch‐line coupler (BLC) with a size reduction of about 70% of a conventional BLC has been introduced. The coupler has been designed using a defected ground structure (DGS). No bonding wire or via holes have been used. The simulation results have been verified by measurement with good agreement. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
