In this study, we report the implementation and analysis of a Raman fiber amplifier based on low cost incoherent pumps. The amplifier performance was compared experimentally and theoretically, with a coherent pumping amplifier. A decrease of 0.03 dB/nm on the gain spectral tilt is achieved with the incoherent pumping amplifier, in co‐ and counter‐pumping configurations using a SMF fiber. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
