Degree of polarization degradation due to intrachannel nonlinearity with different bit‐rates and modulation formats is experimentally and numerically investigated. The degradation becomes obvious in 40 Gbit/s transmission, especially for intensity‐modulated signals. It will deteriorate the effectiveness of polarization multiplexing and polarization interleaving transmission. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
