A new planar antenna using two‐dimensional patch array resonator for an improved‐bandwidth performance is presented. The antenna, designed to work at 6.8 GHz on a 1.27‐mm‐thick substrate with a dielectric constant of 9.8, has a total size of 314 mm 2 . The measurements showed a 6‐dB frequency bandwidth of 12.9%, which is a significant improvement over the 3.3% bandwidth measured from a 40 mm 2 single‐patch reference antenna. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
