Microstrip stepped‐impedance transformers using a Sierpinski fractal shape are proposed for the first time. The proposed fractal‐shaped stepped‐impedance transformers can greatly enhance the operating frequency bandwidth. Bandwidth up to 44.0% and 73.9% ( S 11 ≤−30 dB) have been achieved by the presented two‐section and three‐section fractal‐shaped maximal flat stepped‐impedance transformers, respectively. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
