In this article, the authors investigate and compare the gain and noise figure of various 1480‐nm pumping erbium‐doped fiber amplifier configurations to amplify 32 digital wavelength division multiplexing channel signals operated in the long‐wavelength band of 1570–1610 nm. It was found that the two‐stage designs are better than one‐stage design to offer the higher output power and gain with moderate low noise figure in single forward pumping scheme. Especially, the two‐stage double‐pass configuration, Type A, provides gain enhancement more than about 5.4 dB without paying any noise penalty. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
