In this letter, we study the performance of low‐density parity‐check (LDPC) codes in a Poisson optical channel with on–off keying modulation. We modify the iterative decoding algorithm used in binary phase‐shift keying modulation and additive white Gaussian noise channels. The simulation results show that the LDPC codes has performance improvements over parallel concatenated convolutional codes. Therefore, LDPC codes is well suited for optical channels with signal energy constraints. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
