Mutual coupling study has been carried out on microstrip Meander line antenna elements for use in active‐phased array radars. The basic Meander line antenna element has been designed to obtain linear horizontal polarization with a wide bandwidth and wide beamwidth in S‐band frequency. The elements are fabricated on a low cost glass epoxy (FR4) substrate with array interelement spacing of approximately half wavelength. The mutual coupling study has been carried out in a linear and planar array environment and the results show no performance degradation of the array element impedance and patterns due to mutual coupling. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
