We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple and novel optical transmitter for 10‐Gbit/s dark RZ signals. The proposed transmitter comprises a phase modulator and a delayed line Mach‐Zehnder (DL‐MZ) interferometer. Different duty cycle and extinction ratio of dark RZ signals can be generated by adjusting the time delayed line of the DL‐MZ interferometer. Dark RZ signals show higher optical spectra efficiency. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
