A new omnidirectional monopole antenna well suited to application in a wireless universal serial bus dongle for wideband operation is presented. The antenna is an L‐shaped metal‐plate monopole antenna consisting of a rectangular monopole element and a matching portion. The antenna is suitable to be mounted at the top region of a host dongle as a concealed antenna and can provide a very wide operating bandwidth of larger than 6.8 GHz (∼3.4–10.2 GHz). In addition, omnidirectional radiation is obtained for frequencies across the operating bandwidth. Effects of the system ground‐plane length on the antenna's impedance and radiation characteristics are also analyzed. Details of the proposed antenna are described, and a prototype of the design example is constructed and studied. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
