This investigation discusses the propagation characteristics of single complementary split‐ring resonator (CSRR) in planar transmission media. To characterize the single CSRR, the effective electromagnetic parameters, such as highly frequency dependence of normalized attenuation constant (α( f )/ k 0 ), normalized phase constant (dispersion relation) β(f)/k 0 , and characteristic impedance (Z 0 (f)) are extracted with the full wave electromagnetic (EM) simulation and measurement. Additionally, the wide bandgap characteristics of periodic CSRRs are also discussed. Finally, we applied the periodic CSRRs to suppress the harmonics of the conventional dual‐mode ring bandpass filter (BPF) by using the propagation characteristics of the periodic CSRRs. The experimental results agree well with the simulated results. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
