Extensive experimental study on composite slabs with fiber inclusions has been carried out. Attention is focused on the key factors affecting the effective properties of fiber composite slabs, i.e., concentration, length, and conductivity of fiber inclusions and electrical contact between fibers. Two kinds of fibers with different conductivity, namely, Cu and C, are considered. Samples with fiber inclusions of different concentration and length are fabricated. Transmission coefficients of these samples were measured. The measured results agree reasonably well with simulation results obtained by using a previously proposed method. The effect of the key factors has been identified. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 49: 185–190, 2007; Published online in Wiley InterScience (www.interscience.wiley.com).
