Based on Floquet theorem and Maxwell's equations, the governing five‐term recurrence relation is derived for doubly periodic (DP) waveguide. Its dispersion curve is calculated. Schemes to realize DP waveguide are discussed. Measured date on a model are introduced to establish the proposed concept and the dual‐mode characteristics of DP waveguide as a fundamental transmission line. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
