A novel microstrip slot antenna backed by a ground plane of large bandwidth and high gain is presented. A fan‐shaped termination of a microstrip feeder with a straight stub is used to excite a rectangular slot and a circular patch to realize the broadband characteristic. Its measured voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) ≤2 bandwidth reaches ∼102%, covering 1.97–6.05 GHz with the ratio bandwidth of 3.07:1. The measured antenna gain is 5.5–7.8 dB over the entire bandwidth. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
