Gap‐loaded microstrip square‐ring antennas are investigated in this study. Because of the gap loading, the square‐ring antenna resonates at much lower frequency than that in the unloaded case, which gives a miniaturized narrowband antenna. A detail parametric study is carried out to understand its properties. An experimental prototype is fabricated and its performance is compared with simulations, confirming the computed results. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
