Though an interleaver with Gires‐Tournois (GT) etalon is very attractive for achieving smaller channel spacing and compact configurations, its insertion loss should be reduced further so as to utilize it in an ultra narrow DWDM system. In this article, an asymmetric input–output ports configuration is proposed to obtain efficient coupling within the interleaver and consequently to reduce the insertion loss of the interleaver. The interleaver fabricated with asymmetric configuration has an insertion loss of −0.72 dB. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
