In this paper, the optimization of matching loads for lossy transmission lines is carried out by means of a suitable optimization strategy. Starting from a ladder network, which approximates the characteristic impedance of a given lossy transmission line with a limited number of lumped elements, the problem solution is obtained by minimizing a suitable cost function through an innovative particle‐swarm‐based method. The effectiveness of the synthesis approach is assessed in the case of a three‐section ladder network through selected comparisons with experimentally measured data. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
