A leaf‐shaped monopole antenna with an extremely wide bandwidth is introduced. The antenna is composed of a leaf‐shaped metal sheet with three circular holes vertically mounted on the ground plate covered by a dielectric layer. Its measured −10‐dB return‐loss frequency range is from 1.3 to 29.7 GHz with ratio bandwidth of about 22:1. This antenna provides bandwidth covering the L, C, X, and Ku bands and exhibits a nearly omnidirectional radiation pattern with a simple structure, which is suitable for various military and commercial ultra‐wideband applications. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
