Experimental data and calibrated simulations for an enhanced wavelength converter based on semiconductor optical amplifiers cross‐gain modulation are presented. Theoretical results for spectral components along the SOA cavity are discussed and a nonhomogeneous bias current injection profile is suggested with an improvement of 4 dB in the XGM wavelength converted eye‐opening. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
