In this paper, a novel patch‐slot‐patch (PSP) structure is presented. The frequency‐resonant characteristics of this structure are calculated and measured. Gain enhancement of 15 dB is obtained for a PSP structure as the superstrate of a microstrip patch antenna. A grating‐lobe reduction of more than 16 dB is observed for a PSP structure applied over a 3 × 1 linear array. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
