In this paper, we propose a novel defected ground structure (DGS) for lowpass filter applications. The basic resonant element of the proposed DGS unit shows the elliptic characteristics, and two transmission zeros can be realized to extend the stopband. Incorporating compact microstrip resonant cell (CMRC) in microstrip line above the DGS unit improves the rejection level of stopband. The theoretical and measured results are presented and show good agreement. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
