The class of electromagnetic media characterized by negative permittivity and permeability values, recently of great interest, is generalized under the label negative‐definite (ND) media. Assuming no losses and no dispersion as first assumptions, relations between the Poynting vector and wave vector are derived for isotropic, b‐isotropic, gyrotropic, and uniaxially chiral special cases of ND media. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
