The multipole expansion for the free‐space Green's function is transformed into an inverse power series of the radial distance to the observer. The fields of a group of sources may be computed outside the source region very accurately by using only the first three terms in the series. Formulas are given for estimating the error as a function of the group diameter and radial distance. The new series may be applied to fast integral equation methods and antenna near‐field analysis. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
