A novel miniaturized printed monopole antenna suitable for cellular handset terminals is presented. A substantial reduction in antenna size was achieved due to the use of the inverted‐F antenna concept combined with a capacitive feeding system. The antenna operates in three frequency bands, that is, GSM 1800, PCS 1900, and UMTS, with VSWR ≤2.5. The compactness of the antenna structure allows it to be placed on the top as well as the bottom of a handset. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
