A novel and highly accurate algorithm for simulating the scattering from thin metal strips and penetration through narrow slots is presented for the transmission‐line modelling (TLM) technique. This approach allows the incorporation of these fine features into numerical simulations whose discretisation is too coarse to directly resolve them, which is a very desirable capability for many scenarios such as those regularly encountered in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) studies. The technique functions by interfacing a set of local analytical solutions for the fields in the vicinity of the strip or slot with the fields present in the large‐scale numerical simulation. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
