A super compact‐size rat‐race coupler without any lumped elements, bonding wires, and via holes is proposed. In this study, we use the stepped‐impedance structure to reduce the circuit dimensions. Also, symmetrical folding and bending techniques are considered in order to further reduce the circuit size. The size of the proposed coupler compared to the conventional ring coupler is about 18% (including ports) at 2.4 GHz. The element sizes of the components can be patterned easily using the standard printed‐circuit‐board etching process. This coupler is very useful for applications in wireless‐communication systems. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
