Abstract This paper addresses the electromagnetic wave propagation in a set of waveguiding structures evolved from the H‐guide, where at least one of the common double‐positive (DPS) dielectric slabs is replaced by a double‐negative (DNG) slab. A full‐wave analysis for the modes propagating in each structure is presented. Unusual propagation characteristics, such as anomalous dispersion, mode bifurcation, super‐slow modes, and both co‐directional and contra‐directional mode coupling, are reported. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
