A novel compact and microstrip‐fed antenna with band‐stop characteristic for ultra‐wideband applications is presented. By embedding a notch in the ground plane, the ultra‐wideband property for the proposed antenna is achieved. To create a frequency band‐stop characteristic, a simple U‐shape slot is inserted into the radiating patch. The designed antenna has a stop‐band of 4.92 to 5.86 GHz while maintaining wideband performance from 3.1 to 11.25 GHz for the return loss of less than −10 dB. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
