An antenna system for WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access Forum) mobile phones with the E911 function for locating wireless users is presented. The antenna system comprises a wideband stubby metal‐plate monopole antenna for WiMAX or IEEE 802.16e operation in the frequency bands between 2 and 6 GHz and an internal planar inverted‐F antenna (PIFA) for global positioning system (GPS) operation at 1575 MHz for the E911 function. In addition, the two antennas for WiMAX and GPS operations show good isolation with S 21 < −20 dB over the operating bands. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
