Yield control in multisection helix traveling‐wave tubes (TWTs) is a fundamental issue in the manufacturing process. Assuming TWT small‐signal gain as a design goal, yield degradation due to the helix‐pitch manufacturing error is investigated in depth. The relevant contribution of the sections with lower helix pitch is studied. On the basis of the obtained results, indications for defining the helix‐pitch profile that provide a better compromise between yield and performance are given. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
