A two‐stage high power L‐band superfluorescent fiber source consisting of a double‐pass forward Er‐doped amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) seed source and a double‐pass Er/Yb co‐doped fiber amplifier is obtained. Output power is 216 mW and conversion efficiency is 13.7%. The ASE seed source benefit improving output spectrum and preventing from lasing. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
