Due to the limitation of nodal‐voltage analysis, wave behaviors such as the S ‐parameter representations of the RF/microwave circuits cannot be observed for SPICE‐type circuit simulators. This paper proposes a nodal formulation for the ideal directional coupler to separate the incident and reflected parts of the voltage so the reflection/transmission coefficients can be easily calculated, even in large‐signal conditions. Two simulation examples are given, including a band‐pass filter and a power amplifier in order to demonstrate the availability of the proposed method with confirmation from other microwave‐circuit software. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
