Recently, planar microstrip resonators employing 2D Hilbert curves were introduced, outperforming existing solutions. However, very little attention has been paid to multilayer resonators with embedded 3D curves. In this paper, four novel 3D resonators are compared using full‐wave EM simulations. It is shown that the 3D Hilbert resonator outperforms all others, achieving very high values of the unloaded quality factor. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
